Power Out? Here's How to Open Your Garage Door Manually

Step 1: Make Sure the Door Is Fully Closed
Before you pull anything, confirm the door is all the way down. If you disengage the opener while the door is partially open, the door could come crashing down, especially if a spring is weak or broken. A fully closed door rests on the ground and won't move.
Step 2: Find the Emergency Release Cord
Look up at the opener track (the rail that runs from the opener to the door). You'll see a short rope or cord hanging down, usually red, with a handle on the end. This is the emergency release cord. Every automatic garage door opener made in the last 30 years has one.
Step 3: Pull the Cord Down and Toward the Door
Grab the handle and pull it straight down and slightly toward the garage door (away from the opener motor). You'll hear a click. This disconnects the door from the opener's drive carriage, putting it in manual mode.
Step 4: Lift the Door
Grab the door at the bottom edge and lift straight up. If your springs are in good shape, the door should feel light, maybe 10 to 15 pounds of effort. If it feels extremely heavy (like you're dead-lifting the full weight of the door), your springs are weak or broken. Stop and call a technician.
Step 5: Secure the Door Open
Once open, the door should stay up on its own thanks to spring tension. If it wants to slide back down, you have a spring issue. In the meantime, use a C-clamp or locking pliers on the track just below one of the rollers to keep the door from falling.
How to Open Your Garage Door Manually from Outside
If you're locked outside during a power outage, you need an exterior emergency release. This is a key-operated lock on the outside of the door, usually near the top center. Not all doors have one installed, if yours doesn't, it's worth adding ($40 to $75 installed).
Turn the key, pull the lock tumbler out, and it triggers the same release mechanism as the interior cord. Then lift the door manually from the bottom.

If the opener doesn't reconnect on the first try, manually move the door until the carriage clicks back into place, then try the remote again.
